Being a good libero isn’t always about mastering certain techniques, but also about your mindset. To be successful, you need to take advantage of every opportunity.
With these ideas in mind, here are a few solutions to make sure you’ll shine in your next game.
Advanced Strategies as a Libero
Bait the Server
Servers won’t just throw the ball to the opposite side of the court, but they’ll try to cause some impact. Therefore, they’ll try to serve away from you or perhaps towards a teammate who’s struggling a little.
Show some intention that you’re going towards the struggling teammate, and you’ll force the server to change the direction. Move out of the area, go there and over there, and stick to a passer.
Keep in mind that this technique may also bait your teammates, so it pays off to discuss such strategies upfront. Moving around shows aggression in your actions. Even if they don’t change direction, they’ll be confused. The idea is fairly simple. You’ll be in control of their thoughts.
Cover Causes Frustration
A good blocking team doesn’t like surprises, yet you can always cause frustration by helping to cover a ball and transition defense into a killing offense. Covering means you can support your team and confuse the opponent.
On the other hand, there’s another positive to this strategy. If you’re always covering hitters, they’ll also feel your support. They’ll gain more confidence in their actions, and they’ll also challenge blocks with a different mindset, which is a massive bonus.
Support Your Setter
There were quite a few libero players in the history of volleyball that used this strategy, with Sergio Santos being one of the best. If you’re not sure how to support the setter, find some of Sergio’s old games and observe his style.
To support the setter, you need the ability to jump out of the back of the court straight into the attack zone. Join the setting game as it builds up, so make sure you can always transition to a scoring opportunity.
Supporting the setter implies delivering a convenient set on a regular basis. Of course, it doesn’t mean you can join in blindly. Make sure the defensive area is taken care of before you decide to support your setter.
Talk to Your Teammates All the Time
Everyone knows how important communication is in volleyball, but most players don’t do it enough. As a libero, you must communicate throughout the entire game. Practice this while in training. Talk to your mates constantly and make sure they understand your style.
First contact done? It doesn’t mean your job is over. You need to figure out what’s going on after that. What’s the opponent doing? What kind of attack are they building up for? How about the defense?
A setter, for example, won’t always see what happens after a block, so offense might be slightly off at this point. As a libero, you need to observe what’s going on and direct them accordingly.
Simply put, the libero has more purposes, but one of them implies facilitating the game for their teammates through observation and communication.
The bad news is communication isn’t always natural. So talk all the time, even when you don’t really need to.
Take Advantage of Every Free Ball
Each player aims to focus on their position and responsibilities. A defensive player won’t participate too much in attack, for example. They’ll stick to their position and wait for the right opportunity to step in.
Now, the coach will expect the best player in terms of ball control to handle the play. This way, the team will be very efficient because everyone else can focus on their job.
A good libero must always pay attention to the free ball. Taking over and passing puts the game back on track, meaning other players won’t have to disrupt their concentration.
No Hesitation When Passing
Sometimes, you won’t know what to do. You’ll have half a second to think about your next step. Can you reach the next pass? Can you go for it? This issue is referred to as decision fatigue. In the long run, you’ll end up thinking too much and doing too little.
Instead of making decisions, simply go ahead and pass every single ball you can reach. Your job suddenly becomes much easier. If you can reach it, pass it. There’s no hesitation involved, but a more specific plan that will also help with speed.
Commit to such balls, and your reaction time will be dramatically reduced.
